Cinderella Stories; Transformations of Historic Birmingham Buildings in the 80’s

with No Comments

Cinderella Stories; Transformations of Historic Birmingham Buildings is an illustrated guide showcasing the city center’s commercial preservation success during the 1980’s.  Cinderella Stories recounts the ways that public policy, dedicated public education and many individual acts have made a difference in the quality of the city, significantly impacting economic development and historical preservation.

A total of 60 architectural transformations of various styles and scale are presented. Most are accompanied by “before” photos, showing how neglected or thoughtlessly remodeled these buildings had been prior to rediscovery of their architectural integrity and adaptive reuse. They make a compelling argument for enlightened public policy, conservation of worthy buildings through skillful design and execution, and for the irreplaceable character they provide Birmingham. In championing Birmingham, by recognizing the importance of its architecture and the value of its buildings, its citizens have fostered the city’s revitalization, through responsive and coordinated infrastructure renewal.
