Before the arrival of Christopher Columbus, Native Americans have been establishing communities in what is now called as the United States of America. Numerous people from various tribes have experienced prejudice, genocide, and resettlement ever since the colonization of the Americas. It is important for readers of all ages to acknowledge their contribution to this country, and the fact that indigenous people were the first ones to settle in the United States. While they have endured a lot of pain, they are still keeping their culture and spirits alive by teaching their traditions and spreading their joy in their community. It is also important to keep in mind that Native Americans are NOT people of the past, but they are NOW people. Their traditions and culture may be older than this country, but their ancestors are everywhere! For Halloween or Thanksgiving, please give it another thought when wearing a headdress or celebrating the founding of America. With that being said, this week’s Read Woke challenge is about Native American Voices and each book has different themes and experiences from different tribes and outstanding people.
