“A Nation Talking to Itself”

with No Comments

Sixteen successful people in high-profile positions in business and politics were asked what they read each day to stay informed.  Guess what they all read—national newspapers.

Homewood Public Library carries three national newspapers – daily editions of USA Today and Wall Street Journal and the Sunday New York Times – as well as the Birmingham News and Birmingham Times.  They are on display in the Periodicals room. Back issues as far back as a month or two may be available upon request.

Not to put too fine a point on it, newspapers need to be bought and read to survive.   We’re glad to do our part in generating interest.

“A good newspaper is a nation talking to itself.”  Arthur Miller

“An informed citizenry is at the heart of a  dynamic democracy.”   Thomas Jefferson

“News is something someone wants suppressed. Everything else is just advertising.”     Lord Northcliffe

“Every time a newspaper dies, even a bad one, the country moves a little closer to authoritarianism…”  Richard Kluger

“People don’t actually read newspapers.  They step into them every morning like a hot bath.”   Marshall McLuhan
